Call me crazy, but I spent almost six months trying to figure out which satellite system was best: our house was in a constant state of Direct TV vs Dish Network comparison. After much research (and soul searching), I’ve come to the conclusion that both are wonderful providers, and the final decision regarding which to choose lies with the consumer. But, there are a few things to watch out for when choosing which satellite TV provider will best meet your viewing needs:

#1: Types of Packages Available

With more than 200 individual channels available on both systems, it may seem impossible not to find exactly what you’re looking for every time you turn on your TV. But, being satisfied with your programming depends a great deal on the type of package you choose.

For instance, both providers offer basic packages that offer the standard local and national channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, PBS), but may vary a great deal on the other channels they offer. For instance, one company’s “family package” may offer a dozen national-feed PBS stations offering round-the-clock children’s programming, while the other provider’s “family package” may include channels for older kids like Disney, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Neither is better or worse than the others, you just have to carefully weigh which programming options best suit your family’s individual needs.

#2: Sports Options

The simple fact remains: Direct TV is generally touted as the sports authority when it comes to the types and quality of games they offer through the network. Although Dish Network may not yet offer the major sports showings of their competitor, many non-traditional sports enthusiast do seem to enjoy the offbeat and international offerings Dish provides. While football and baseball fans will really need Direct TV to get the best coverage

#3: Pricing

Pricing, too, can vary between the two providers, depending on the program packages they provide. But, both seem to offer starter basic packages at around $20 per month, with more complex premium style packages at $50-$65 dollars a month, and of course more add-on sports, movie and specialty programming running as high as $100 or more per month.

#4: Availability

Both Direct TV and Dish Network tout broad availability almost anywhere in the United States. The main difference between the two is that Direct TV pulls its signal from the southern sky, while Dish Network gets its signal from the opposite direction (the northern sky). So, if a consumer does not have a clear view of either of these horizons, it could interferer with signal reception from one particular company.

#5: Installation & Equipment

Both companies may officially charge for installation and equipment, but considering that both Direct TV and Dish Network both seem to offer continuous special promotions and sales, no one should ever have to pay for either installation or basic equipment from either company.

The only thing to really shop for between the two for is how many free or low-cost extras they happen to be offering at the moment. One month Direct TV may offer 10 free pay-per-view movie passes with installation, while Dish Network gives away 3 months service to the movie channel of your choice, or even a free upgrade in package. Take your time to review each company’s specials and promotions to get the best deal you can.

#6: Service

It really doesn’t matter which satellite service provider you choose: Direct TV or Dish Network – they both tout an excellent service record with few interruptions and fast and easy trouble shooting guides. So now that you know what to compare when choosing your satellite TV service, get out there and cut the cable cord!

There is a ferocious battle raging on out there in the entertainment service. On one side is DirecTV, which is the biggest player in the industry in America, and on the other side are cable TV providers.

The greatest beneficiary of this marketing war of attrition is the subscriber like you and I. Among the benefits that have ensued from this are improved television services and very attractive prices.

Existing users of either services are surely well acquainted with the above statements, but I am sure that what newbies or aspiring subscribers like you are itching to know is which one of these offers the better service, hence should you sign up with?

There are many angles you can approach this tricky question. One way is by doing a direct comparison of the cost in relation to the number of programming offered.

For instance, while it will cost you $37.30 monthly for a 64 channel subscription from a cable TV firm, a 155 channel monthly package which includes 50XM satellite radio channels from DirecTV will set you back by just $29.99.

And while you will have to shell out an additional $10.95 if you want extra digital channels from a typical local cable company, you do not need to pay extra for such services when you sign up with DirecTV as all of its programming is transmitted in digital format.

Any one joining a cable TV network will only get the cable box free. Those that desire a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) will have to pay for the device. This is in addition to the mandatory installation costs of equipments which vary according to localities.

For instance, the cost in my locality is almost $40 for a room, with an extra $10 added on top for every additional room.

In stark contrast to the above, every new subscriber to DirecTV network gets free equipments-satellite dish, a four room receiver, and a DVR. As a subscriber, you will also not be charged a single penny for the entire installation.

And what about the quality of services offered? Statistics shows that the average annual outage rate for cable TV is between 3%-5% compared to 1% for DirecTV.

What’s more, many cable TV subscribers who encounter problems with their systems can only call for help during official business hours. This is a marked departure from the excellent online and toll free customer care services of DirecTV.

Are you still in doubt about which provider offer better services in terms of channels, cost effective rates, interesting programming, and overall quality?

You be the judge.

There are two main direct broadcast satellite TV providers in the United States today: DirecTV and Dish Network.

About DirecTV

In 1991, PrimeStar became the first satellite service in America, but its competitor DirecTV, launched in 1994 by Hughes Electronics, eventually absorbed it. DirecTV has since become the largest satellite TV provider in the United States, with over 15 million customers as of the end of 2005.

DirecTV provides premium channels (such as HBO), nationwide turnaround channels (such as ESPN), and local programming (such as ABC). It also has several HDTV channels, showing about 900 hours of high definition content a week. In addition, DirecTV offers XM Satellite music channels, and some pay-per-view and video-on-demand services.

The company also provides digital video recorders (DVRs) to its customers – its first DVR was licensed from the TiVo company, which brought “pause-live-TV” technology into the public eye, but DirecTV now uses the internally-developed XTV system. Its receivers also have a built-in parental control system, allowing parents to block certain channels, or shows with a certain rating, from being accessed without a password.

DirecTV offers free professional installation with all of its packages.

About Dish Network

The other major satellite TV provider in the United States is Dish Network, which was launched by EchoStar Communications in 1996. It has grown steadily in popularity, with about 11 million customers at the end of 2005.

Like its competitor, Dish provides premium channels, turnaround channels and local programming. It has also added 29 HDTV channels, acquired from a failed satellite company called Voom, which competed briefly with Dish and DirecTV between 2003 and 2005 by focusing on high definition television channels. Dish provides over 1400 hours of HDTV programming a week.

Digital video recording (DVR) technology is also available with all Dish packages, and the company has recently offered a “PocketDish” portable DVR device that can download and view media (TV shows, music, photos and games) that is recorded and stored on the set-top device.

Dish also provides pay-per-view, video-on-demand, interactive TV, and Sirius Satellite Radio channels, as well as parental control features, and they provide free installation for their satellite TV equipment.

Competition is good

Dish Network and DirecTV both provide the expected packages of satellite TV channels, and both have great customer service. The competition between them to provide more programming choices, better technology, clearer picture, fewer interruptions in service, and lower prices is making satellite television better for everyone.

One of the great advantages Cable TV has over any DBS (Digital Broadcast Satellite) providers, such as Direct TV or Dish Network is it’s always on no matter what the weather conditions!

I can’t think of anything more annoying or frustrating than watching a good Football, Basketball, Hockey, or Baseball game, don’t forget NASCAR! And then because of a little rain the TV screen starts to pixelate turning my once exciting game or race into a mosaic of colored checkered squares. I then come to the terrifying realization that my DBS satellite was going out again, and simply stare at the depressing picture that now says “Acquiring Satellite Signal”!.

Which Satellite provider? A choice to make..

Back in those days Cable TV was not available to me, at that time we had three choices, C-band satellite which was one of those big ugly dishes between 10 & 12 feet across and cost about $2500 at that time, but we would have had to cut down way too many trees.

Second choice was Direct TV which looked at 101 west longitude for the main programming, but we had about 4 trees to cut with Direct TV. And third choice was Dish Network which looked at 119 west longitude for main programming and we only had to cut down two trees.

We decided on Dish Network mainly because of the tree issue, even after Dish Network was installed we still had problems on windy days when our TV picture would start to pixelate as the trees blew into the line of site. This could clearly be seen on the signal strength screen, where you could watch the signal go from the 90s to 0 as the winds blew. So you can call that either wind fade or tree fade.

Learn to live dangerously! Where’s My Cable TV?.

Besides the Rain fade, Wind & Tree fade, you may have other fade problems depending on where you live. I live in the northern part of Wisconsin and we also have Ice fade and Snow fade. Now I’ve done some stupid things in my life like {getting a Dish} but I would never ever suggest what I’ve done during an ice storm, it was sheer stupidity {Don’t do it!}.

I got home from work with the roads already icy, and our Dish Network signal was lost. I know there was something that I was really looking forward to watching that night, which I can no longer recall. Anyways I get the ladder, a can of window defrost that they sell for cars, and a plastic spatula.

The roof was very slippery so from the top of the ladder I start climbing up to the dish stretched out on my belly, I grabbed the mast that holds the dish to keep from sliding down the roof. When I got done spraying and scrapping all the ice off someone yells up that the picture is back on!

Yippee Dish Network is working again, only now I’m afraid to let go of the mast thinking I’m going to slide past the ladder and fall over the deck {about a 30ft drop} oops.

So I then started spraying the window defrost all over the roof with my free hand and in the process getting my cloths soaked with the chemicals, after a time I finally got up the nerve to climb backwards down the roof and that meant on my bare belly since my shirt and coat pulled up as I was going down.

After that purely stupid stunt, the following spring I purchased a heated 24 inch Dish called a Hot Shot. It almost always helped for Ice fade and Snow fade but if the LNB on the dish gets ice coated or wet snow sticks to it, you will still lose your signal. Another myth busted is buying a 24 inch dish will not prevent Rain fade, it may help a little but I still lost my signal during rain. Thank God Cable TV became available to me; my IQ also went up at the same time!

A fitting Quote by Bill Cosby: A word to the wise ain’t necessary; it’s the stupid ones who need the advice!.

There’s also one more fade problem they don’t seem to talk about much, and it doesn’t seem to matter what part of the country you’re from. Its Cloud fade, yes even without rain sometimes you will lose your signal from clouds that are in the line of site from your Dish to the satellite, which is approximately 22,300 miles in space.

I called Dish Network technical department about this problem, and after some over the phone trouble shooting, they came to the conclusion that the clouds must have had some heavy moisture content in them that blocked the signal.

It wasn’t Dish Networks equipment it was working fine; we had the signal in the high 90s on a clear calm day. So even clouds can cause a DBS satellite signal loss. It’s just something a DirectTV, Dish Network, or any DBS Satellite subscriber has to live with.

Digital Cable TV, arrived in our area!

As soon as Digital Cable TV became available to our area, they came to our aide immediately! There’s no more worries about line of site {Trees in the way}, Rain fade, Cloud fade, Wind fade, Snow fade, and especially Ice fade!

It’s like a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders, almost like the feeling you get when you pay off your car or mortgage, much less to worry about and alot more freedom.

With digital cable there’s only one little cable that provides multiple services. Cable high-speed internet, cable telephone service is also available, and an excellent programming package that fits nicely in the budget.

Digital cable TV also gives you a super clean picture and I recommend using composite video cables, also known as RCA cables, S-Video cable, or component video, depending on your equipment compatibility.

Any one of these cable selections will give you a very noticeable improvement over the standard RF input on the back of your TV. And something I look forward to is High-Definition programming, with my Digital cable, its ready and waiting for me, I’m just waiting to purchase my 42 inch plasma screen after a little more research.

With all that Cable TV has to offer, one of the most important things for me is the excellent reliability & worry-free service. Dish Network and Directv may work well in the desert where there are no trees, clouds, rain, snow, and ice, but what about 95% of the rest of the country? I definitely enjoy my Cable TV service. It was a great choice for our family.

A Quote by Pat Riley: Look for your choices, pick the best one, and then go with it.
