A satellite is a device that orbits around the earth. They transmit different signals to each other and to the areas of the earth. A few decades ago, scientists realized that they can be used to transmit television programs to a home or a business. That was when some people started installing Satellite Dishes as big as 18 feet in diameter to get as many channels as possible. Fortunately, it is now much cheaper and more convenient. It all started in 1994, when DIRECTV began their system. The sales of the small dish systems have exploded since then. Also, DIRECTV, owned by Hughes Electronics, now has a formidable competitor in the EchoStar DISH Network, which makes it better for consumers. This competition has lowered the cost of satellite television quite a bit and allows subscribers to choose from a wider variety of programs. Now, the basic packages are cheaper than most those of local cable companies.

The amazing growth and sales rate of satellite television has surprised everyone. It is estimated that one out of every ten households now has a satellite television system. And it is also predicted that the number will double within a couple of years. The reasons why so many people have switched from local cable companies are obvious. Satellite television offers more channels, better sound, better picture, and more pay-per-view events at a cheaper price.
