Because satellite TV doesn't depend on local cable lines, people can choose whichever satellite TV company they want. More larger number of companies means more prices and programming packages to choose from. This is not the case with cable television where you have to choose from a limited number of cable companies in your local area.

The main disadvantage of satellite TV systems is that you don't get local channels like NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, UPN, and PBS. Satellite subscribers have to pay extra to get these local stations. Nowadays the price to get them is very reasonable but you may not get all of your local channels. Another downside is that you now have more choices and options than cable services. This means more time and effort researching to find what is best for you.
